Earlier this year, we started open sourcing Wire server code under the AGPL license. Today, the code necessary to run Wire servers is available to everyone for review.
The next step for the team is to remove dependencies on specific services to pave the road for an easily self-hostable server.
This is another milestone on the road to a server setup that runs on any hardware, and federates with the main Wire network.
User interest to self host the Wire server has been extremely high. We’re getting requests from the security community, academia and non-profits, and also from business clients — especially in the finance and the public sector.
The process of open sourcing the server code also led us to reflect on the decisions that have gone into building user-friendly security. We covered some aspects of it in the “Product design decisions for secure messengers” article.
